A three phase power distribution transformer is also popularly known as an isolation transformer. It changes high voltage to low voltage applied in electric energy distribution. Thus, it provides the final voltage transformation in the electric power distribution system. In general, the level of a distribution transformer is less than 200 MVA. Needless to say, some national standards allow for ratings up to 5000 MVA to be in the category of distribution transformers.

Construction of Distribution Transformer

The power distribution transformer is designed like a small-size transformer. It has different parts, such as an oil tank to soak the windings by placing in it, a conservator within the tank to maintain the temperature of oil, Buchholz relay to indicate errors like loss of oil once it goes low, improper flow of oil, breather unit to change its color, an indicator to show the level of oil within the conservatory unit. The transformer also has a temperature detector to monitor the temperature of the oil, a pressure relief device to decrease the pressure and avoid any explosion, a thermal relay as an indicator, a radiator to increase the transformer's cooling efficiency, and a bushing to connect the internal windings of the transformer.

Lifecycle Stages of Three Phase Power Distribution Transformers

Production and Assembly: A power distribution transformer's life cycle starts with its production and assembly. In this stage, the core, windings, and insulation materials are constructed for the transformer, and then the components are assembled to make the entire device.
Installation and Commissioning: After being produced, transformers are positioned inside the distribution network at certain points and then commissioned to guarantee optimal operation. Testing for load capacity, insulating resistance, and electrical integrity are all part of this step.
Operation and Maintenance: In order to avoid malfunctions and guarantee peak performance, transformers need to have routine maintenance performed. This entails regular examinations, testing of the oil and insulation, cleaning, and maintenance to quickly resolve any problems.
Decommissioning and Disposal: Eventually, transformers reach the end of their operational lifespan and must be decommissioned and disposed of responsibly. Proper disposal methods are essential to mitigate environmental impact and adhere to regulatory requirements.
