Why do transformer rigid busbars need to be equipped with expansion joints?

1.The main reason why expansion joints are required for rigid busbars of transformers is to prevent stress concentration and damage caused by thermal expansion and contraction. Since objects have the characteristics of thermal expansion and contraction, the length of the busbar will change due to heat during operation. If expansion joints are not installed, the busbar and supporting insulators will be subjected to excessive stress due to this change, resulting in damage.

2.The function of the expansion joint is to allow the busbar to expand and contract appropriately when the temperature changes through its elastic design, thereby avoiding stress concentration and damage caused by thermal expansion and contraction. Specifically, the expansion joint is usually composed of multiple layers of soft copper or aluminum sheets, which can provide the necessary expansion compensation when the busbar length changes, protecting the busbar and supporting insulators from damage.
