What happens if a transformer runs out of oil?
If a transformer runs out of oil, it will likely overheat, lose its electrical insulation, and risk a short circuit, potentially leading to fire or explosion. The oil performs critical functions of cooling and insulation, and its absence compromises these functions, increasing temperatures, degrading solid insulation (like paper), and allowing moisture and air to enter, all of which can cause rapid failure.

Consequences of Low or No Oil
Overheating:
Without sufficient oil, heat cannot be effectively transferred, causing the internal components to overheat.
Loss of Insulation:
When the oil level drops below the windings, they can become exposed to the air and one another, leading to a breakdown in insulation.
Short Circuits:
A short circuit can occur between coils or between coils and the tank, creating a massive current flow and potentially damaging the transformer.
Fire and Explosion:
Excessive heat from overheating and short circuits can ignite the oil or surrounding materials. The breakdown of insulation can also generate volatile gases, increasing the risk of an explosion.
Degradation of Solid Insulation:
Without oil, this paper degrades, which reduces the transformer's operational life.
