Leave a message

Malawi's power distribution network expansion demands distribution transformers that perform reliably under high altitude operation, fluctuating humidity, and strict international specifications. We are pleased to offer a 1000kVA oil immersed distribution transformer engineered to meet the technical requirements of the ESCOM ED0017 specification, the reference standard commonly applied to distribution transformer procurement in Malawi.

System and Environmental Parameters

Our 1000kVA three phase oil immersed transformer is designed for the Malawian grid conditions defined in ESCOM ED0017:

  • System: 11 kV nominal, 12 kV highest system voltage, 50 Hz ±2.5%
  • Ambient temperature range: -5°C to +45°C
  • Maximum installation altitude: 1800 metres above sea level, with reinforced insulation to compensate for reduced air density
  • Relative humidity: up to 95%

Engineering tip: Altitude is a key point that many suppliers overlook. At 1800 m above sea level, the reduced air density weakens external insulation and impairs cooling, so the design must include altitude-corrected insulation clearances and derating calculations. When we submit a bid, we always attach the altitude correction sheet to the technical offer, so the client's evaluation team can verify compliance directly.

Electrical Ratings

  • Rating: 1000 kVA, three phase
  • Voltage ratio: 11 kV to 400 V (11/0.4 kV)
  • Vector group: Dyn11
  • Cooling: ONAN (Oil Natural Air Natural)
  • Tap changer: Off-load tap changer, ±5% regulation in steps of 2.5%
  • Insulation levels, primary (11 kV): basic insulation level 95 kV, power frequency withstand 28 kV
  • Insulation levels, secondary (400 V): basic insulation level 30 kV, power frequency withstand 2.5 kV

Engineering tip: The 2.5% tap steps are specified because Malawian 11 kV feeders commonly experience moderate voltage fluctuation along rural distribution lines. The off-load tap changer in 2.5% steps lets field engineers adjust to actual site voltage without changing the transformer, which is exactly what ESCOM ED0017 requires. We confirm the tap range against the actual feeder voltage profile before production.

Built to International and Southern African Standards

Manufactured in accordance with PIESA 1006, SABS 780, IEC 60076, IEC 60815 and IEC 61109, the transformer incorporates the technical features required for Malawian project acceptance:

  • Copper windings: High voltage and low voltage windings both in copper, ensuring superior conductivity and long service life
  • PCB-free insulating oil: Environmentally friendly oil containing no polychlorinated biphenyls
  • Corrugated tank: Welded corrugated radiator tank, with minimum paint film thickness of 125 micrometres, finished in avocado or grey
  • Bushings: Manufactured to SABS 780, with profile characteristics to IEC 60815
  • Terminations: Cable boxes for both sides - primary cable box suitable for 3-core XLPE/PILC cable up to 120 mm², secondary cable box suitable for 4-core SWA cable up to 185 mm²
  • Fittings: Lifting lugs on both ends of tank cover, bolted tank cover, earthing boss M12 x 25 mm, lockable wheels, and clear tank markings visible from ground level

Engineering tip: Southern African utilities evaluate transformers against both IEC 60076 and SANS 780, and SANS 780 is stricter on the mechanical side. It adds the tank stiffness test and requires a minimum paint film thickness of 125 micrometres, which matters under Malawi's 95% humidity and UV exposure. We also fit the cable boxes to the exact cable sizes in the specification (120 mm² three-core on the primary, 185 mm² four-core SWA on the secondary), so site cable termination is straightforward - no adapter work at installation.

Type Tests and Routine Tests

Every unit is covered by a complete test program with certificates issued in English:

Type tests: Temperature rise test to IEC 60076-1, dielectric type test to IEC 60076-3, tank stiffness test to SANS 780, corrugated tank fatigue test to IEC 60076-5, short-circuit withstand test to IEC 60076-5, and pollution test for composite bushings to IEC 61109.

Routine tests: Winding resistance test to IEC 60076-1, voltage ratio and phase displacement test, short-circuit impedance and load loss test, no-load loss and current test, paint thickness test to SANS 780, and effectiveness of sealing test to SANS 780.

Supporting Southern African Power Projects

With extensive experience serving power distribution projects across Southern Africa, including Malawi, Zambia, Mozambique, and South Africa, we understand the tender requirements, certification procedures, and acceptance rules specific to the region. We work closely with EPC contractors, utilities, and project owners to provide technical bid responses and customized transformer solutions. Our standard warranty covers three years for domestic customers and one year for overseas projects.

Why work with us:

We do not treat the ESCOM ED0017 specification as a checklist - our engineers go through it clause by clause, flag the acceptance-critical points (altitude correction, paint thickness, cable box sizes, English certificates), and reflect them in the quotation and drawings before you commit. If your project is at tender stage, send us the specification and we will return a clause-by-clause compliance statement together with the quotation.

If you are planning a substation or distribution network project in Malawi and require 11 kV distribution transformers, contact our team today. Send us your project technical specifications, and we will provide a detailed technical proposal and quotation tailored to your requirements.
