How does a transformer transform voltage?
The transformer works on the principle of electromagnetic induction. It consists of an iron core made of silicon steel sheets (or silicon steel sheets) and two sets of mutually insulated coils wound on the iron core. One set of coils is connected to the power supply, called the primary coil or the primary side, and the other set of coils is connected to the electrical equipment, called the secondary coil or the secondary side. When AC power is applied to the primary coil, changing magnetic lines of force are generated in the iron core. These magnetic lines of force cut the secondary coil, thereby generating induced electromotive force and voltage in the secondary coil. Since the magnetic lines of force are alternating, the voltage in the secondary coil is also alternating, and the frequency is consistent with the power supply frequency.
The voltage transformation ratio of the transformer is closely related to the turns ratio of the coils. In theory, the ratio of the primary coil voltage to the secondary coil voltage is equal to the ratio of the number of turns of the two. This means that if the number of turns of the secondary coil is less than that of the primary coil, the transformer is stepping down; otherwise, it is stepping up.
