What is the difference between VPI and cast coil transformers?

VPI (Vacuum Pressure Impregnated) transformers are coated with resin and are suitable for clean, indoor environments, while cast coil (or cast resin) transformers have their windings completely encased in solid epoxy resin, providing superior protection against moisture, dust, chemicals, and mechanical stress for harsh or outdoor environments. The key difference is the degree of encapsulation: VPI transformers are open and rely on varnish penetration, whereas cast coil transformers are fully "solid" and void-free.

VPI Transformers

Insulation Method:

Windings are dipped in a polyester varnish and then subjected to alternating vacuum and pressure cycles to ensure the varnish penetrates the entire winding.

Environment:

Best for stable, indoor environments with moderate humidity and heat, such as offices and standard commercial applications.

Protection:

The varnish coating offers protection against moisture and contamination but is less robust than cast resin.

Cast Coil Transformers

Insulation Method:

Windings are placed in a mold, and epoxy resin is poured around them under vacuum, creating a solid, void-free, solid block of insulation.

Environment:

Ideal for challenging, unforgiving environments, including marine applications, chemical plants, and outdoor installations with high dust, humidity, and airborne particles.

Protection:

Provides exceptional mechanical strength, electrical surge resistance, and high resistance to moisture, dust, and corrosive substances.
