What Is an HV Switchgear Cabinet?

An HV switchgear cabinet is the metal enclosure that houses the switching, protection and control equipment of a high voltage distribution system. It is the physical cabinet that contains the vacuum circuit breaker, current/voltage transformers, busbars, earthing switch and protection relays, forming a safe, insulated and earthed housing for equipment operating from 12 kV up to 40.5 kV.

Cabinet Structure

The cabinet is divided into individually enclosed compartments - busbar compartment, circuit breaker compartment, cable compartment and relay/instrument compartment - each earthed and fitted with its own pressure relief channel for safe internal-arc venting.
