Transformer Oil Level Indicator (abbreviated as OLI) is a monitoring device mounted on the conservator of an oil-immersed transformer. It displays the actual level of transformer insulating oil and assists operators in verifying whether the internal oil volume of the transformer is within the normal range.

Functions of Transformer Oil Level Indicator

1. Monitor Oil Level Variations

It indicates the liquid level of insulating oil inside the conservator. The oil level rises or falls in response to changes in ambient temperature and operating load.

2. Fault Prevention

An excessively low oil level may expose windings or iron cores and degrade insulation performance. Abnormally declining oil level usually indicates an oil leakage fault. Excessively high oil level can trigger oil overflow from the conservator or abnormal internal pressure buildup.

3. Remote Alarm Output

Most oil level indicators are fitted with magnetic switches or microswitches. Once the oil level hits preset high or low alarm thresholds, an alarm signal will be transmitted to the monitoring system.

Classification of Transformer Oil Level Indicators (OLI)

Based on structure and operating principle, OLIs fall into five categories: tubular level gauge, pointer-type OLI (diaphragm/bellows type), float-linkage type, magnetic flap level gauge and electronic oil level transmitter. Tubular and pointer types are the mainstream options for transformer conservators. Tubular gauges are widely fitted on medium & small distribution transformers, while pointer-type indicators serve as standard fitting for large main transformers and fully-sealed bladder-type conservators.

  • Tubular level gauge (glass / PC transparent tube): Used for open-type conservators, aged corrugated conservators and small distribution transformers.
  • Pointer-type oil level indicator: Dominant choice for fully-sealed bladder & diaphragm conservators (most popular model).
  •
  • Magnetic Flap Oil Level Gauge:It displays liquid level by magnetic force driving external indicator flaps to change color with distinct red-white or blue-white contrast for clear reading. Auxiliary switches can be fitted to realize remote alarm function.

Tubular Oil Level Gauge (Glass Tube Type)

Construction

Consists of upper & lower flange connectors, temperature-resistant transparent glass/PC tube, rubber sealing gaskets, small air vent & drain valves and mounting brackets. The upper and lower connectors separately connect to gas chamber and oil chamber of conservator. The tube is directly communicated with conservator oil level following the communicating vessel principle.

  • Upper connector: Connects to conservator air compartment
  • Lower connector: Connects to conservator oil compartment
  • Tube marking: Standard oil level scales at -30℃, +20℃, +40℃ (benchmark oil level marks for transformers)

Though compact in size, oil level indicators directly determine the safe operation and maintenance cost of transformers. Improper model selection, incorrect installation or missing alarm configuration may lead to severe potential safety hazards. GNEE Electric supplies YZF/YZS series pointer-type oil level indicators and tubular oil level gauges for oil‑immersed transformers. Our products cover dial sizes ranging from φ90 mm to φ250 mm, support customized high/low oil level alarm contacts, and provide OEM/ODM service together with overseas project certifications such as CE and TUV.

Working Principle (Communicating Vessel Theory)

Oil level inside the conservator keeps consistent with liquid height in transparent tube. Oil expands with rising temperature and contracts when cooling down, causing liquid level fluctuation, which can be read directly through the transparent tube.

Advantages

Simple structure, low cost and easy maintenance; only tube and gaskets need replacement for breakdown repair.

Direct visual reading without mechanical jamming, convenient for routine site inspection.

Quick installation, mass standard accessory for small-capacity transformers.

Application Scope

10kV/35kV oil-immersed distribution transformers ≤2500kVA and old small auxiliary station transformers.

Pointer-Type Oil Level Indicator (Bellows/Diaphragm OLI)

Construction

Four core assemblies: sensing unit, mechanical transmission, dial & pointer, alarm microswitch.

Sensing core (key part): Rubber diaphragm / metal bellows mounted on conservator side tapping port, inner side contacts conservator rubber bladder.

  • Transmission set: Linkage + reduction gear set converting diaphragm telescopic displacement into pointer rotation.
  • Dial plate: Round dial marked with standard -30℃, +20℃, +40℃ oil level scales.
  • Auxiliary part: High/low level microswitches for overfill & low-oil alarm, available to connect with central control system.

Working Principle

Inside fully-sealed bladder conservator, volume expansion of insulating oil under heat compresses the rubber bladder, which pushes diaphragm/bellows to produce axial displacement. Such displacement drives pointer deflection via internal gear-linkage mechanism. When oil shrinks at low temperature, bladder resets and pointer returns to original position. It calculates actual oil level indirectly by internal conservator pressure variation without direct contact with transformer oil, the core merit for full sealing design.

Core difference: Tubular gauge reads real oil height; pointer OLI converts internal pressure into oil level reading.

Advantages

  • Compatible with fully-sealed bladder conservators (standard for modern main transformers), preserving tank tightness to prevent moisture ingress.
  • Robust metal housing with outstanding weather resistance, anti-impact and anti-oil-leakage under frigid or humid outdoor environment.
  • Built-in high/low level alarm contacts to transmit warning signals to substation control cabinet & temperature controller remotely.
  • Intelligent version matches with signal transmitter for 4~20mA analog output to realize real-time remote monitoring in central control room.
  • Fully sealed dial against dust and water, free from scale contamination blocking sight.

Application Scope

35kV/110kV and above power main transformers, heavy-duty industrial oil transformers over 3150kVA, fully-sealed conservators for wind & photovoltaic box-type transformers.

Common Causes of Abnormal Oil Level

Phenomenon Probable Causes
Continuous oil level drop Oil leakage, aged sealing components, decreased oil temperature
Continuous oil level rise Rising ambient temperature, overloaded operation
Stationary pointer Stuck float, mechanical malfunction
Abnormal oil level reading Damaged level gauge or calibration deviation

Key Points for Routine Inspection

  • Verify whether the oil level stays within the normal range (marked Zone N).
  • Check the gauge glass for clarity and crack-free condition.
  • Confirm proper operation of alarm contacts.
  • Inspect the conservator and flange connections for oil seepage or leakage.
  • For conservators equipped with rubber bladder or diaphragm, inspect the intactness of bladder/diaphragm synchronously.

Installation and Inspection

Installation of Oil Level Indicators

For float-type gauges with radially swinging rocker arms, mount the unit at the center of the conservator end cover. Other float-type level gauges with axially swinging rocker arms shall be installed at the minimum oil level position of the conservator. Telescopic-rod level indicators for diaphragm-type conservators need to be fitted at the maximum oil level position of the conservator. During installation, ensure no structural components restrict the free movement space of rocker arms and floats.

Pre-installation Inspection

Check the level gauge for damage and corrosion incurred during storage and transportation before installation; remedy any defects prior to mounting. Manually toggle the rocker arm slowly by hand; the arm shall rotate smoothly and reliably trigger signals when reaching the limit positions. Examine the insulation integrity of connecting cables, terminal lugs and signal switches before installation.

Maintenance of Oil Level Indicators

Carry out annual routine inspection for in-service oil level indicators. Inspect insulation conditions of wiring and switches, and confirm whether sealing gaskets require replacement.
